SPECIAL NOTE:
This design was awarded a Honorable Mention in the Special Section Covers category in the annual Arkansas Press Association contest.
Clean with a "Wow"-factor. This cover category has been a favorite of mine in years past. This year, I chose to use a close-up shot of a leaf on hardwood. I added a slightly stronger tone of red to the image to make it pop a little bit louder. I also chose to use a compressed sans-serif font to go along with the lines of the hardwood. Using this font also appeared to lengthen the cover giving it more 3D appeal.
I chose to emboss the title into the wood to give it a stamped (or etched) look. The font I used for the tag line was a compressed serif font in oblique form. It just looked good.
The key to making the leaf jump out at you was the stem overlapping my text. This gave the cover depth, which in this case was the "wow"-factor.
Between the colors, depth, and strength of this cover, it is one that will be in my portfolio for a very long time.
