Design: Living Faith
A special publication cover design.

This particular cover had personal meaning to me. This section included an article about the LDS church, which is my faith of choice.
Unfortunately, I was unable to use any religious symbol as the cover. No Bible, no Book of Mormon, no statue of Christ, no cross (not that I would go that route) or anything.
So, now the task was showing faith, without the religious implications.
What I created was based around nature and growth, with a hidden meaning. The First Vision, as it is coined, took place in a quiet grove of trees as Joseph Smith knelt in prayer. What better way to show faith than bowing down and giving all to the Lord?
What better way for me to send myself a reminder of where my faith lies than on a piece of artwork that is for and about faith.
Color selection was based around the photograph. I needed the lettering to stand out but I didn't want to take away from the image, which portrays light rays coming through the tree limbs.
A mid-tone pastel green was chosen as the backdrop behind the lettering. A soft white-to-yellow gradient was placed on the text 'Living' and a light texture was added to give it personality.
Font selection was how I view Jesus: Graceful and strong. A bold script font for the headline. Then a serifed font with a lot of kerning for the sub-head. Drop shadows on both gave the text some depth.
I love the way it turned out. It was one of the few designs I've done that I would consider "inspired". Strong words for a strong design.
