Three vs. the TrinityThree vs. the Trinity
The doctrine of the Trinity
Posted on: 02-12-2008

One common problem many mainstream cookie-cutter Christians have with the very Christian LDS church is that we do not subscribe to the doctrine that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are one being in substance. The Bible clearly states, as I will show you below, that they are clearly three separate distinct beings with one purpose.

The trinity doctrine teaches us that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are one substance. Why have these churches strayed from the teachings of our Father?

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, had this to say:

"It is not our purpose to demean any person’s belief nor the doctrine of any religion. We extend to all the same respect for their doctrine that we are asking for ours. (That, too, is an article of our faith.)

But if one says we are not Christians because we do not hold a fourth- or fifth-century view of the Godhead, then what of those first Christian Saints, many of whom were eyewitnesses of the living Christ, who did not hold such a view either?

We declare it is self-evident from the scriptures that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are separate persons, three divine beings, noting such unequivocal illustrations as the Savior’s great Intercessory Prayer, His baptism at the hands of John, the experience on the Mount of Transfiguration, and the martyrdom of Stephen—to name just four."

Among the great scriptures are several distinct verses that clearly set the division of "substance" between the 3 divine beings. Such scripture verses include:

John 5:19
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Or what about:

John 6:38
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Who sent him?

John 15:24
...but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

"...BOTH me and my Father." A reference to two different individuals?

Matthew 19:17
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God...

And again:

John 14:28
I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

It does not say "...for I am greater than myself."

Matthew 26:39
O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.

With whom was he pleading, if not the Father?

Matthew 27:46
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

I disagree with following a pre-formulated creed that serves as an interpretation of the words of the Holy Bible. Instead, prayer and study would do well to correct many misinterpretations.

I have questioned things in my life for as long as I can remember. I have always kept an open mind. Since I joined this church, I have had plenty of questions! I've done lots of studying, I've had lots of prayer to receive answers to my questions about this topic, the Book of Mormon, and much more. I've found these things to be true.

I once read "He who asks may be a fool for 5 minutes, but he who never asks will be a fool for life."

Don't be a fool for life. Open your heart, open your mind, pray, study, learn. It's the only way to know for sure. I love the gospel of Christ and what it has done for me and my family.

Find out what it can do for yours.
